Hello,
Please can someone advise what I can claim for 'home allowances' or similar with respect to me rental property. I posed the following question to HMRC but the response seems to be at odds with various landlord/tax articles (e.g. http://blog.propertyhawk.co.uk/2009/...ld-now-be.html and http://www.propertyhawk.co.uk/index....agazine&id=429)
QUESTION: "Hello, I pay most of my tax through my employee. I also receive income from a UK property that I rent to others. Can you confirm that for the work I carry out at my home, I can claim £4 per week (or £18 per month) for household expenses (as per http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/relief-household.htm)?"
RESPONSE FROM HMRC: "The allowance of £4 per week is only available to home working arrangements for employees and that in specific circumstances only. If the work being carried out at home relates to the rental property then this particular allowance would not apply."
I may well have not quite asked the right question but would appreciate it if someone could assist and tell me which part of the Self Assessment form I should be putting this expense into? I think I need to put this 'home allowance' and also my mileage expenses in to box 29 called "other allowable property expenses"
Thank you very much.
