I purchased my flat off plan in 2005 from a large commercial builder who subsequently sold the building to another commercial concern who are now the freeholders. I have received a letter from the new managing agents (the first ones were replaced following the revelation of questionable financial and management practices)advising that because I let the flat, I have to obtain permission from the freeholder by way of a licence. This will cost me approx £200 in the first instance and requires me to pay a renewal fee every year. I already pay extortionate service charge and ground rent fees, the flat has negative equity and I have been meeting a large 'cost versus income' shortfall from the outset. Why are freehold companies allowed to apply these charges - isn't the flat my property to do with as I wish? I paid enough for it. I have always paid all communal property fees promptly? I am beginning to wonder if the perception that freehold and management companies are unethical, immoral leeches is correct!
