How to ensure that my AST has now definitely ended

I would like someone’s opinion please about what obligation (if any) I may have to the Agent & a Relocation company now that the tenancy has come to an unexpected early end.

The situation was that I did have a possible long term tenant that was found through Lettings agencies whom I paid a ‘One off’ letting fee to. The period was for 1 year on a sort of rolling basis where they themselves & not the relocation company involved would have 2 rights to re new in subsequent years if the tenant was required to stay in the country. The only clause that I had managed to negotiate at the time was in the third year, where I could have ended the tenancy within the first 6 months of that period. However what’s happened now is that the tenant needs to move back home just after the first year is up & although I have no problem with this & perhaps am pleased to be getting my property back sooner rather than later due to a change in my own circumstances then I am now not sure what sort of ‘Hold’ – if any that the Agent or the Relocation Company could have over me, i.e. to make me agree to put other tenants into my property given that they almost had a 3 year let secured on it?

So far I have received a letter from the Relocation company explaining the whole thing & who are quite open about what has happened, However the Letting Agent seem to be playing a different game with me - whereby they have only told me by letter that they have heard from the Relocation company informing them that the tenant would be moving out but have not mentioned anything about finalising things towards the end of the letting period (being 12 months). Next I received another letter that I perceive as rather a strange kind of letter from the Agents again mentioning that the current tenancy is due to expire soon & the reason that they are writing to me is to find out if ‘I’ wish to re new the tenancy with the current tenants??? When they must know full well that they are leaving the country & have no need for it! They then go on the say that they have written the same letter to the current tenants at the address to see what they would like to do after this period is over. I have not returned this letter as I don’t feel that I should have to, however I am a little concerned given this agents bullish reputation that they might have some sort of ‘hold over me’ with the 2 year further re let option that I described above that was negotiated at the time & am now kind of wondering if they could still keep me to this by just finding different tenants that I have to maybe just o agree to.
One other thing to be considered is that the actual AST in place that will expire in one month is actually in the name of the current tenants themselves & not that of the Agent or the Relocation Company.

Any help of advice would be greatly received.

Sincerely

Nightshade
