changing notice period?

A tenant is on a one year ASTA with rent being payed every two months. He says he would like to stay on after the term runs out, but only on a monthly periodic tenancy.
I would not have a problem with this, but is there a way to reduce the notice / rent period without creating a new minimum six months term?
