I have rented a house with the same landlord for over 10 years. In February I got a letter from a company saying they were the landlords agents and I should pay my rent to them. I contacted the landlord who knew nothing about it. A few days later I was in the bath & there was some almighty banging at the door. Whoever it was then banged on every downstairs window. I felt very frightened & as I was in the bath I stayed there until I felt safe to get out. There was a notice stuck with very sticky tape to my front door which said we understand this property to be vacant & if we do not have contact within 7 days will change the locks. How they came to this assumption I do not know as the TV & fire were clearly visible from at least 3 windows. I couldn’t get hold of my landlord so I rang the number on the letter. They said the landlord must owe money to the bank. They told me to keep my rent in a separate account as they didn’t have one for it to go into yet & in the mean time they wanted me to send a copy of my tenancy agreement so they could work out when to give me notice. They told me to have no further contact with my landlord. I contacted my landlord again & in the meantime they’d had a call from this company. The landlord said they were not in arrears and it was all because of the miss selling of a commercial loan that they were told would be renewed but when the time came the bank said they wouldn’t renew it & they wanted all their money back. My landlord has been round & shown me the bank statements to prove there were no arrears and the letters from the bank asking for their money back. They even showed me a land registry search that has the landlords name on it. I really don’t know what to do. The landlord said there is no court order to take over the properties and the company won’t confirm if there is or there isn’t a court order. My landlord has been today to deliver a notice as I am now officially in arrears with the rent. They are very apologetic about what they are doing but they say they have no option as they are disputing the receivers taking over the properties & have to maintain their hold over them. What do I do I have the money to pay but don’t know who to pay it to? Please help I am at my wits end.
