Bills and Tenants - Best process?

I'm new to the landlord profession, so all advice is well received. UK based, so answers applicable to that please.

What is the process you guys go through to ensure the smooth transfer of bill ownership to tenants?

Do you alert the various companies as soon as someone moves in, then wait for them to set up their own arrangements, then do the same after they move. If someone can give me a blow by blow account of the best way to minimise financial risk and time spent on this I would be grateful?
