I moved into a rented house as a student on the first of July, when we arrived we were told that cleaners had been in the day before but the house was really dirty inside, we've found two smashed windows in the conservatory, glass in the garden, garden is filthy, no hot water and a leaking ceiling from the bathroom to the kitchen. We were told that over the next week that improvements were being made to the house but nothing has been done, we were also told any furniture that needs replacing would be replaced within 48 hours. 4/5 mattresses need replacing one of the beds bows in the middle almost to the point of touching the floor when sat on and another is being held up by mdf. Two of the tenants have had parties without warning and when asked to quieten down became aggressive, threatening then keyed my car and blocked my exhaust. I originally called the manager who said he would talk to the two other tenants and take inventory of furniture, I made him aware that I was going to report the incident with my car to the police which he then advised me not to do. He has not contacted the other two tenents at all and we have been waiting for replacement furniture for 4 weeks. We then tried to contact the actual landlord who has refused to talk to us and will only talk through the manager. We just want to leave the house but we've signed a contract and have been told we have to give 6 months notice, we then asked if we found replacement tenants could we leave, they originally told us they if we decided to leave they would help us look for new tenants but now they are refusing to help at all but I'v now found the landlord advertising a room in another of his houses because the tenants decided to leave. Its unfair how differently they are treating us. Is there anything we can do? I am terrified to come home from work and sit in the living room that I pay rent for because I just get abuse shouted at me by the other tenants friends, we even got abuse from the when we told them we're looking for replacement housemates. Its awful living here and I just have no idea what my rights are as its student renting not private. HELP!!!
