Unpaid utility bill

My tenant falsely informed the gas company he was moving out and to close the account, giving my name as the new occupier. He subsequently opened an account with a different supplier providing them with an opening meter reading different from the "closing" one. A year later I am now being pursued for this outstanding gas bill of about £200.
The gas company will not redirect the bill back to the tenant without proof of his continuous residence, something I can't provide as I have a verbal rental agreement with him, or the tenant claiming responsibility for it, something he clearly doesn't want to do.
Has anyone been in a similar situation or have any suggestions on what I can do?
