AST renewal

Hi,

We moved into a rental property back October whilst we were selling our house.

4 months into the tenancy the letting agent sent us a letter which consisted of 1 cover letter asking about our intent, 2nd page saying we wanted to renew for 6 months a box to sign and they would draw up the paperwork. 3rd page section 21 notice.

At this point I wanted to sign a 12month agreement so I phoned LA and they said no problem just cross out and send back.

I did this about 3-4 weeks ago and still have nothing back from LA. The strange thing was the landlord name on the section 21 was different to the original lease. It was the son and daughter of the landlord on lease.

I have thought nothing about this for a while but concerned that we are now 6 weeks or so away from the date and having the section 21 means that the landlord can gain possession.

I also have received news that I have a very small chance of a job overseas but will not know till June so have emailed the LA to ask can they amend the new tenancy agreement to put a break clause in allowing us to leave at 4 months providing 2 months notice is given.

It has been a few days now and no response from them.

My question is was my signature on the intent to renew a binding contract (it wasn't a tenancy agreement) and I changed the term by crossing it out as the letter clearly stated they would draw up the required paperwork.

At the moment I don't want to find out I have committed myself to something whereas the landlord could turn up at the end of the initial 6 month agreement seeking possession of the house.

Can anyone give me advice as to where I stand, as I have 3 children and a partner I need to start looking at other places but can't if I am committed here.

Thanks

David
