Notice Period

I am renting a flat since 2009 as assured shorthold tenancy (AST), every year it was extended for another year with the break clause saying: 'any time after six months or after a similar period following a fixed term extension to the original tenancy, either L or T can invoke a breakin clause providing 60 days notice.

Now, the last extension was signed from 15 Aug 2011 until 14 Aug of 2012.
I have served 1 month notice to stay until 14 Aug 2012. However, the landlord says that as per contract it should be 2 months.

Do I understand correctly that given that my fixed term of 6mo has ended, my AST contract became statutory periodic tenancy which is payable monthly. Given this, only 1 month notice is required.

Please advise
