Disappearing white goods

I would appreciate some input on this although I fear I may just have been stupid/naive!

I found a property through a letting agent. It was advertised as furnished. My friend (now flatmate) went to view it and asked if everything there came with the flat. He was assured that it did.

A couple of weeks later (after a lot of referencing and fee-paying), we signed the tenancy agreement. Then we arrived at the flat to find that, although all the furniture was present, the washing machine and fridge-freezer were not. The landlady is managing the property. She said she had asked the LA specifically to make sure that we were clear it didn't come with the white goods. The LA said that she hadn't made any such communication. So we have had to buy appliances. I am aware that second-hand ones are available but for peace of mind we have bought new ones, coming to £410 plus installation fees. It will also be a bit of a nuisance dealing with the items at the end of the tenancy.

The tenancy agreement doesn't specify if furniture/white goods are included or excluded. I would expect all properties to come with a fridge but again perhaps I am naive. The LA was very apologetic; the LL seemed to think it was all a funny joke until she realised we were quite upset. Then she pointed fingers at the LA.

I suppose my question is just really: are we entitled to compensation? And also - am I being unreasonable in thinking we were misled?
