Ongoing dispute with letting agent/Landlord re heating

I am a tenant in a rented apartment. I reported a fault in may 2012 regarding an issue with the heating which meant that three of the five storage heaters in the flat aren't working at all. Two in the living room/kitchen area and another in the hallway.

The letting agency has sent out engineers but keeps changing their tune regarding what is wrong with the heaters, but the latest decision was they needed replacing but they needed to order replacements. They've finally arranged for these to be fitted on Friday 25 jan13, 8 months after initially reported.

Due to the minus degree temperatures outside I've had to purchase portable heaters to try and make the temperature bearable but do to the inefficient nature of them, this will have increased my electricity costs.

I complained to the letting agents about the financial inconvenience, not to mention the effect on my health, having to miss a days work due to ill health most likely attributable to the poor heating in the flat, and the additional stress upon me.

The letting agents have basically replied, essentially asking how much I would be looking at as financial loss. I have no idea what to say, where I stand on my rights and what would be a realistic compensatory figure. I know they're asking rather than giving an offer in a hope that I'll undercut any amount they'd be prepared to offer.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Thanks
