It is clear that the racist or divisive image of bongo bongo land exists not in the UKIP member's mind but in the minds of media types of a certain age.
They are clutching at a shared image of smiling natives, obviously of a colour, in a stereotype native costume dancing etc in some undefined backwater of Africa South America or a remote pacific island, drawn from a childhood perception based on Tarzan Zulu and Daktari.
It is not that its “wrong to use such descriptions these days” because it is or was racist, but that since then, information means that we have a clear idea of what life is like in those countries and islands, known and unheard of, large and tiny.
Its use is therefore still relevant in BBL being somewhere remote and unheard of.
It conjures Hacker and Appleby trying to force the other to find it on the globe or Malcolm Tucker screaming “ Bongo ******* bongo land, where the **** is that” :D
Any racist use is therefore in the minds of the media types who clearly haven’t caught up and it reveals so much about
