I am trying to help a friend who is new to property letting. To cut a long story short HMRC have now issued the codes for self assessment online and siad there may be a penanlty for informing them late, the amount involved will be more than the minimum you have to declare but not as much as the personal allowance so there will be no tax to pay as she has no other taxable income.
They said they would send a request to complete the tax return and would give a three month period to do it but it still has not arrived. if she just completes online without this letter having been sent will it trigger an automatic penalty?
Each time she contacts them it is like starting from scratch again,they query amounts etc it is as if they do not want her to complete the return, advice appreciated.
